Halmahera and West Papua 18th May to 8th June 2010 £3800 excluding international flight
On this trip we shall be concentrating our efforts on Kingfishers and BoP's as well as the other specialist species in this region. We will visit the off islands of Kofiau, Biak and Numfor in search of their endemic Paradise Kingfishers. Another island we will be visiting is the unspoilt paradise of Waigeo where we shall stay in a basic but comfortable tented camps, which are very close to a known lek of Wilson’s Bird of Paradise, which we shall watch, displaying from specially built hides. Also we shall visit the highlands of the Arfak Mountains where again we shall be staying in a basic campsite, which allows us to be close to display grounds of Western Parotia. We will continue into the lowlands in search for the mega Shovel-billed Kingfisher.
Day 18: Numfor and travel to Biak by chartered boat or scheduled flight
Day 19: Biak. Target birds: Biak Paradise Kingfisher
Day 20: travel to Jayapura by scheduled dawn flight and travel onward to
Muaib jungle Camp.
Day 21: Muaib jungle camp. Target birds: Yellow-billed, Variable Dwarf, Blue black, Shovel-billed Kingfishers, Rufous-bellied Kookaburra, Victoria Crowned Pigeon, Northern Cassowary, Pale-billed Sicklebill, Magnificent Riflebird, King Bird of Paradise, Lesser Bird of Paradise, Jobi and Glossy mantled Manucodes, Twelve-wired Bird of Paradise
Day 22: travel back to Jayapura.
